Cell-like compartments from frog eggs 6

    6593

Cell-like compartments that spontaneously emerged from scrambled frog eggs, with nuclei (blue) from frog sperm. Endoplasmic reticulum (red) and microtubules (green) are also visible. Image created using confocal microscopy.

    Public Note
Internal NoteFrog sperm nuclei were added to these egg extracts to provide a source of nuclei, but they are not required for compartment formation. Sperm nuclei-containing compartments can divide repeatedly to produce more compartments like cells in an embryo. Shown in blue are the nuclei, visualized by the fluorescent protein mCherry-NLS. Shown in red is the endoplasmic reticulum, stained by the ER-Tracker dye. Shown in green are the microtubules, visualized by SiR-tubulin stain. The image was acquired on a Nikon Eclipse-TI inverted spinning disk confocal microscope with a 20x objective. It captures a 1.04 mm by 0.66 mm rectangular region. News coverage: Stanford Medicine press releaseQuanta MagazineStanford Scope Blog
