Active View Entry | Yeast art depicting the New York City skyline6521This skyline of New York City was created by “printing” nanodroplets containing yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) onto a large plate. Each dot is a separate yeast colony. As the colonies grew, a picture emerged, creating art. To make the different colors shown here, yeast strains were genetically engineered to produce pigments naturally made by bacteria, fungi, and sea creatures such as coral and sea anemones. Using genes from other organisms to make biological compounds paves the way toward harnessing yeast in the production of other useful molecules, from food to fuels and drugs. | Public Note | | | | Internal Note | | permission email: https://iqsolutions.sharepoint.com/teams/NIGMS-P/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx?id=%2Fteams%2FNIGMS%2DP%2FShared%20Documents%2FTask%202%20%2D%20Graphics%2C%20Videos%2C%20%26%20Multimedia%20Content%2F%21Image%20Gallery%2FDescriptions%20and%20Permissions%2FYeast%20Art%202019%2FYeast%20art%20FYI%20Fw%5F%20Text%20for%20review%20by%2010%5F23%5F%20noon%20Re%5F%20Image%20request%20for%20NIGMS%20gallery%2Emsg&parent=%2Fteams%2FNIGMS%2DP%2FShared%20Documents%2FTask%202%20%2D%20Graphics%2C%20Videos%2C%20%26%20Multimedia%20Content%2F%21Image%20Gallery%2FDescriptions%20and%20Permissions%2FYeast%20Art%202019 | | Keywords | | | | Source | | Michael Shen, Ph.D., Jasmine Temple, Leslie Mitchell, Ph.D., and Jef Boeke, Ph.D., New York University School of Medicine; and Nick Phillips, James Chuang, Ph.D., and Jiarui Wang, Johns Hopkins University. | | Date | | | | Credit Line | | Michael Shen, Ph.D., Jasmine Temple, Leslie Mitchell, Ph.D., and Jef Boeke, Ph.D., New York University School of Medicine; and Nick Phillips, James Chuang, Ph.D., and Jiarui Wang, Johns Hopkins University. | | Investigator | | | | Record Type | | Photograph | | Topic Area(s) | | ;#Cells;# | | Previous Uses | | | | Status | | Active | |
